Handmade Guitars from Paracho

Buy a unique handmade instrument as part of your Guitar Vacation Retreat!

The village of Paracho, in the state of Michoacan, has been the center of guitar making in Mexico for generations, and has been a musical instrument making town since the 16th century. It is located about eight hours' drive from San Miguel de Allende, in a mountainous area of northern Michoacan, full of pine forests and volcanos (mostly dormant!)

We periodically make trips to Paracho, and occasionally we have a small selection of Paracho guitars for sale. These guitars are generally made of Mexican rosewood (Palo Escrito) back and sides, with Canadian cedar or spruce tops. We sometimes have guitars made of other woods such as cypress as well.

About Our Guitars:

Guitar by Gerardo Escobedo Hernandez The guitars that we have for sale are guitars that we've carefully hand picked from our favorite luthiers in Paracho (generally the Hermanos Escobedos, and Salvador Castillo as well as his dad Ramiro Castillo) and are priced in the $400 - $800 USD range. They come with sturdy hard shell cases which are also made in Paracho. We have selected our guitars for quality workmanship and playability, and in some cases, have made adjustments to the set-up of nut and saddle to make the action comfortable for the beginning to intermediate player.

At this point, we do not ship guitars abroad, as we are not comfortable with selling guitars to people who have not actually played them. We have both experienced that moment of knowing when a guitar just "feels right" and we’ve been part of that process for several of our students... we enjoy that very much, and Internet sales just don't give us the satisfaction of helping someone find the guitar that they will love playing.

Guide Services to Paracho

Entering Paracho from the south We also offer guide services to Paracho. We recommend a three-day, two night trip, by bus from San Miguel de Allende. This gives a full day plus a morning in Paracho, and we’ll take you to all of our favorite luthier shops, as well as leave you to explore on your own, as you wish. The cost for this service is $695 USD, and it includes:
  • Round trip transportation by first-class bus from San Miguel de Allende to Paracho via Morelia
  • Two nights lodging in Paracho (simple but clean and secure accomodations)
  • Guide services to and from Paracho as well as in Paracho
  • All other transportation as needed (cabs, etc.)
Our price does not include your food, tips, or the cost of a guitar. Expect to spend $400 to $2000 USD for a guitar (4 to 20 thousand Mexican pesos) depending on your taste and budget.

If you would like more luxurious accomodations, we can stay in the nearby town of Uruapan, which has the lovely Mansion del Cupatitzio. Budget an additional $250 for the two nights' lodging for yourself (we'll stay at the nearby Hotel del Parque and meet you for breakfast.)

Guitar by Jesus Escobedo Hernandez We have helped a number of our students find Paracho guitars of exceptional quality and value. Going to Paracho is not only a guitar shopping trip — it's an unforgettable adventure! Consider taking a guided trip to Paracho at the end of your Guitar Vacation Retreat!
