Music Fonts
No matter what program or what method for computerized music notation you use,
extra music fonts are always useful.
We use mainly the excellent and guitar-friendly
MusEdit music notation program,
which costs $79 USD. MusEdit does a great job of producing professional looking
scores and lead sheets at a very reasonable cost.
Many non-music-readers use the guitarist's tablature notation program
Tabledit, which we cannot recommend because of its ugly and semi-illegible staff
notation output, which people who don't read music well are seldom aware of!

For that reason we highly recommend MusEdit,
which is capable of staff notation output
as nice as Finale or Sibelius, as well as guitar tablature (TAB) and automatic
translation functions between TAB and staff notation.
MusEdit also permits the use of any symbol from
any installed font on your system, musical or otherwise, through the use of
staff text boxes
which can be placed anywhere on, above, or below a staff or TAB line.
All of the musical examples on this website were created with
MusEdit. Some
of them have additional material or modifications made in Adobe Illustrator
using exported graphics files from
MusEdit.
We obtained all of the fonts below from free downloads elsewhere on the internet.
We are not aware of any licensing issues connected with any of these fonts.
If licensing issues are brought to our attention, we will of course remove them
immediately with apologies.
Standard Music Fonts
These four common musical symbol fonts for staff notation are all similar and are in the classical engraving style. Sonora, however, has straight flags on the stand-alone
eighths, 16ths, etc, instead of the usual curved flag. The total character set used in
music notation is larger than a single font can handle, so all four of these are
missing occasional symbols. Musical Symbols has a character for a short length of
five-line staff, which can be repeated for creating a whole staff line BUT you will
have to reduce the kerning (know what that is?) to eliminate the gap between the
characters. We use this for patching scanned scores where the end of the line is
gone... a time consuming activity which is only marginally worth it!
Specialty Music Fonts
- Boxmark
Boxmark has capital letters in box frames, suitable for rehearsal letters,
and a number of other special musical symbols which are sometimes useful.

- G-Chords
G-chords is a complete set of chord symbols, including the circle-with-slash for
half diminished, the delta symbol for major seventh, the little circle for diminished chords, slash/letter for bass notes,
and pretty much every other chord symbol you can imagine. We have a gif file
with all the keystrokes and their output, which you can print out for
reference and post above your desk. The gif is missing about 3 symbols, but they may
be found in the demo.pdf.

G-chords will not work in our version of Adobe Illustrator (version 10.)
Why, we don't know!
However, we've had good results in Illustrator with all of the standard music fonts above.
G-chords works very well in MusEdit.
- Inkpen
Inkpen mimics handwritten music and uses the same character set as the
common fonts above, plus many more characters, in a total of 6 fonts.
The "hand-written look" chord symbols are very nice if you want an
informal look something like the "Real Book" series. There are two
common symbols that don't match the rest: the Delta (major 7th) and
Circle-Slash (half-diminished) symbols lack the hand-written look,
the only flaw in this otherwise lovely font set.
Our zip file has the fonts plus a .pdf demo for each.

- Opus Figured Bass
The Opus figured bass font is a unique, probably one-of-a-kind font,
useful for Baroque music fans. Our zip file includes
two fonts and a .pdf demo for each. When you run into classical
musicians who don't know their chords, give them a figured bass chart
instead, and then you can say condescendingly, "Where did you study, anyway?"
when they can't cut that either.
