Guitar Resources
Hi There! Welcome to our Guitarist's Resources page! We are Jack and Frances,
two working musicians / guitarists, living (and playing) in a colorful tourist town and
artists' colony in Mexico called San Miguel de Allende. We also run an educational program
which we call Guitar Vacation Retreats. Guitar Vacation
Retreats is an adventure in Mexico, a colorful and unique cultural experience, and also an
intensive guitar instruction program in how to play and think about music the way we do.

In the following list, you will find articles about various aspects of what we practice,
common elements of useful musical knowledge, and basic building blocks of music theory on
the guitar fingerboard.
- Bibliography - a short list of books that point toward the
art of musical thinking, on music theory and guitar technique.
- Circle of Fifths Chart - Our own Circle of 5ths Chart, with historical, musical and practical information. The Circle of 5ths is also called the Cycle of Fifths, and sometimes the Circle of Fourths or Cycle of Fourths. Circle of Fifths is the commonly accepted correct usage.
- Fingerboard Look-up Chart - This map of the guitar fretboard shows you the name
of every note on every string of the guitar from the open strings to the 15th fret,
and also the correct staff notation for every note on every string!
- Fluorocarbon Treble Strings
for Guitar beyond nylon.
- Free Online Guitar Tuner
- Our tuner has six tuning tones which sound when you
place the mouse cursor over the appropriate string in the image.
Works only in Internet Explorer.
- Harmonic Overtone Series - this paper is too long to go in the Music Dictionary.
- Music Dictionary - Our ever-in-process glossary of musical terms.
- Music Fonts - a small collection of useful TrueType music fonts for writing chord symbols, staff notation,
and other useful symbols such as rehearsal letters, coda signs, etc.
You can use them in your word processor, graphics program, or
music notation program. They will work on either PC or Mac.
- Music Notation Software
- Our recommendation is
MusEdit.
We also have online an
interview with Doug Rogers,
the programmer of MusEdit.
- Note Frequencies Charts
- These charts shows the frequency in tempered pitches (A=440 hz.) of notes on the piano keyboard and on the guitar fretboard.
- Order of the Sharps and Flats - Are you challenged to remember the names and
order of the sharps and flats in the Circle of Fifths? Use our Simple Method for
Guitarists to remember them forever, by learning one simple chord shape!
- Staff Notation and How To Read It
- Believe it or not, there are lots of guitar players out there who don't know how
to read staff notation. If you're one of them, this primer on reading music is for you.
- Stringed Instrument Ranges - This chart shows how the range of the guitar compares
with the ranges of the double bass, cello, viola and violin.
- Table of Enharmonic Equivalents - Maybe you really need to know what
"F Flat" is. (Ever hear of the "Musician's Theory of Relativity"?) Just like knowing how to spell in your native language, knowing the correct use of enharmonic equivalents says something about the degree of your commitment to musical excellence. Consider it!
