Travel & LogisticsAirports:San Miguel is accessible most easily by way of the Leon (BJX) airport. You can arrange your own airport pickup through the Viajes San Miguel website. The shuttle service brings you from the airport to the doorstep of your lodging in San Miguel de Allende. If you prefer, we can arrange your roundtrip shuttle pickup for you ($65 USD). The trip from the Leon airport to San Miguel takes about two hours. You may also fly into the Mexico City airport (MEX). Check with Viajes San Miguel website for prices and logistics an shuttle service from Mexico City to San Miguel. The trip from the Mexico City airport will take four to five hours, depending on traffic. Flying to the Queretaro airport is also possible; you will need to hire a cab at the airport. A cab directly to San Miguel from the airport will cost (prices quoted by cabbies vary) the equivalent of $50 to $75 USD, and will take only about an hour. You can save by taking a cab to the bus station and the bus to San Miguel; however, this may be an uncomfortable trip on a second class bus. Overall, for convenience and comfort, we recommend flights to Leon BJX. However, flights to the other airports are often less expensive. We have known people to fly to Guadalajara and take the bus to San Miguel (a five hour bus trip; but you must find your way from the airport to the bus, and may need to spend a night in Guadalajara.) When booking your flight, you will need to consider convenience versus cost. Lodging:We usually don't make lodging arrangements for our students, although we will happily give you our recommendations. For the adventurous, we can arrange a homestay with a Mexican family, where you can practice your Spanish and take full advantage of our friend Marina's traditional Mexican home cooking. Marina and Ernesto's home is in the historic center, a 20-minute walk from our home studio. The price of $325 USD per week includes your own private room with bath, plus three homecooked meals per day. We've had many students stay with Marina and Ernesto, and they have all been happy with the accomodations and the food.Your Guitar:You are welcome to bring your own nylon string guitar to San Miguel, or you can rent one of our guitars for $25 for the week. Read our article on traveling with your guitar.Getting around San Miguel:San Miguel is a very walkable town, with many cabs and buses which are inexpensive and easily available. Parking is difficult as a rule, so we encourage you not to rent a car, which is likely to be more trouble than it's worth. City maps are available at the tourist office in "El Centro" (the historic center of town). |
